| שוב מעשה ברבי אליעזר שירד לפני התיבה ואמר עשרים וארבע ברכות ולא נענה. ירד רבי עקיבא אחריו ואמר, אבינו מלכנו אין לנו מלך אלא אתה. אבינו מלכנו למענך רחם עלינו. וירדו גשמים. הוו מרנני רבנן! יצתה בת קול ואמרה, לא מפני שזה גדול מזה אלא שזה מעביר על מידותיו וזה אינו מעביר על מדותיו. | R. Eliezer once descended as Chazan (on a fast day); he recited the twenty-four blessings but was not answered (with rain). R. Akiva descended as Chazan following him, and said, "Avinu Malkeinu (Our Father, our King)! We have no King other than You! Avinu Malkeinu! For Your sake have mercy on us! And rain fell. The rabbis were suspicious of him, but a Bas-Kol said that it was not that R. Akiva was greater; rather that he was willing to overlook wrongs done against him. |
