Honor and Sanctity

שולחן ערוך אורח חיים סימן תרי	Shulchan Aruch OC 610
א. מקום שנוהגים להדליק נר בליל יום הכיפורים, מדליקין; מקום שנהגו שלא להדליק, אין מדליקין. (ואם יש לו נר בבית, חייב להדליק בחדר ששוכב שם כדי שלא יבא לידי תשמיש עם אשתו, מאחר שרואה אותה אצל הנר שבביתו). ואם חל להיות בשבת, חייבין הכל להדליק. הגה: ומברכין: להדליק נר של שבת ושל יום הכיפורים.	1. In some locales the custom is to light candles for Yom Kippur; and in others the custom is not to light. (If there is a lamp in the home, he must light one in the room where he will sleep as well, so as to prevent marital relations with his wife - whom he sees by the light of the lamp in the home). If Yom Kippur falls on Shabbos, all are obligated to light candles. Rama: They [then] recite the blessing, "... to kindle the lamp of Shabbos and of Yom Kippur.
ב. יש מי שאומר שמברך על הדלקת נר יום הכפורים. הגה: וכן המנהג במדינות אלו.	2. Some authorities say that we recite a blessing upon lighting candles for Yom Kippur. Rama: And that is the custom in our lands.
ג. בכל מקום, מדליקין בבתי כנסיות, ובבתי מדרשות, ובמבואות האפלים, ועל גבי החולים.	3. In all locales, we light in the synagogues, study halls, the dark alleys, and next to the sick.
ד. נוהגים בכל מקום להרבות נרות בבתי כנסיות, ולהציע בגדים נאים בבית הכנסת. הגה: ונוהגים שכל איש, גדול או קטן, עושין לו נר; גם נר נשמה לאביו ולאמו שמתו... ויש אומרים שיש להציע השלחנות ביום הכיפורים כמו בשבת, וכן נוהגין. יש שכתבו שנהגו ללבוש בגדים לבנים נקיים ביום כפור, דוגמת מלאכי השרת; וכן נוהגין ללבוש הקיטל שהוא לבן ונקי, גם הוא בגד מתים ועל ידי זה לב האדם נכנע ונשבר.	4. In all locales it is customary to increase light in the synagogue, and to spread fine cloths. Rama: The custom is to prepare a candle for every man, young or old, as well as a candle for the soul of one's departed father and mother... Some say that we should spread [cloths on] the tables on Yom Kippur as we do for Shabbos, and that is the custom. Some authorities record the custom to wear clean white clothing, to resemble the angels; we also customarily wear the clean white Kitel. The Kitel is also a shroud of the dead, causing humility and a broken spirit.

(ט) נוהגין בכל מקום וכו' - דדרשינן לִקְדוֹשׁ ד' מְכֻבָּד (ישע' נח:יג) זה יום הכיפורים, וכיון דאין לכבדו באכילה ושתיה, כבדהו בכסות נקיה. ונרות הוי גם כן כבוד היום דכתיב עַל כֵּן בָּאֻרִים כַּבְּדוּ ה' (ישע' כד:טו) ומתרגמינן בפנסיא יקרו ה'.	9. We interpret the Pasuk, "To the day sanctified by Hashem, make it honored" (Yeshayah 58:13), as referring [not to Shabbos, but] to Yom Kippur. Since we cannot honor it by food and drink, we do so with clean clothing. Candles are also honor of the day, as in the Pasuk, "With 'Urim' honor Hashem" (Yeshayah 24:15), which Targum translates as, "with lights."
