1)

Why will the idols be broken?

1.

Radak: It is due to the silver and gold on them. (The enemy will want to take the silver and gold.)

2)

What are "Esnaneha"?

1.

Radak: The beautiful garments in the houses of the idols. They put them to honor the idols. This is like Esnan Zonah ? they were Mezaneh with idols, and honored them with silver and gold and beautiful garments.

3)

Do we find that they were burned?

1.

Radak: Yes. When they captured the city, they burned it amidst their great anger at the residents. They were besieged for three years, and did not want to make Shalom with the besiegers.

4)

Will He make its idols desolate?

1.

Rid: He will make the houses of its idols desolate. They were honored in their eyes; they will be desolate. So Yonason translates.

5)

What is the meaning of "Kibatzah"?

1.

Radak #1: this is like Kubatzah (was gathered); the Chirik under the Kuf is in place of a Shuruk, just like "u'Fitechu She'arayich Tamid" (Yeshayah 60:11) is like u'Futechu. Targum Yonasan is like this 1 .

2.

Radak #2: Shomron gathered. Other Arei Yisrael used to bring silver and gold and gifts to Shomron, to the houses of the idols, when they came to serve the idols.

1

Radak: My second Perush is correct (refer to 1:7:5:2).

6)

What did it gather from Esnan Zonah?

1.

Rashi: All this wealth.

2.

Malbim: Shomron thought that all its success is via idolatry - "Asher Amrah Esnah Hemah Li Asher Nasnu Li Me'ahavai" (Hoshe'a 2:14).

7)

How will it return to Esnan Zonah?

1.

Rashi: It will be lost, like all wages of harlots. All that it gathered will be returned.

2.

Rashi citing Targum Yonasan: All that it gathered will be handed over the house of idolatry. Radak ? idolaters will take it.

3.

Malbim: Melech Ashur will take it. It is as if his idolatry gives it to him for an Esnan. I.e. I am not pained over the Churban of Shomron ? they served idolatry and were Mezaneh away from Me.
