Rashi: It is an expression of plundering. Plunderers normally stick together in ambush, lest people sense them and make their animals flee. When the plunderers reach the animals, they spread out from one end of the animals to the other. Ibn Ezra - this is like "Al Peshatetem ha'Yom 1 ."
