How often did the Kohanim need to ignite the fire on the Mizbe'ach?
Rashi (in Yoma, 27b): Every morning, prior to the Tamid shel Shachar, 1 they arranged the Ma'arachah and ignited the fire.
In fulfillment of the Pasuk (7:5) "ve'ha'Eish al ha'Mizbe'ach Tukad bo Lo Sichbeh" (Rashi, Ibid).
Seeing as fire descended from Heaven to burn the Korbanos, why did the Kohanim need to light a fire on the Mizbe'ach at all?
Rashi: Because the Torah writes "Venasnu B'nei Aharon ha'Kohen Eish ... " ? in spite of the fact that fire descended from Heaven. 1
See Sifsei Chachamim.
Why does the Torah insert the (otherwise superfluous) word "B'nei Aharon ha'Kohen"?
Rashi: To teach us that Aharon may only serve when he is wearing his eight Begadim and that if he served wearing the four Begadim of a Kohen Hedyot. His Avodah is Pasul. 1
Moshav Zekenim: Not everyone knows how to ignite the fire on the MIzbe'ach. The singular teaches that it required someone who possessed this skill. (Refer to 1:7:3:1*.)
XXX How will we explain why the Navi repeats "B'nei Aharon ha'Kohen" in Yehoshua 21:4 & 13? PF). See XXX Oznayim la'Torah as to why the Torah teaches the current Din with regard to burning the limbs, and the equivalent Din regarding kindling the logs each morning - by a Kohen Hedyot - in the following Pasuk.
Whaat are the implications of "Venasnu ... Eish al ha'Mizbe'ach?
Seeeing as the Torah writes in Tzav, 6:5 "u'Bi'er alehah ha'Kohen Eitzim ba'Boker ba'Boker", why does the Torah see fit to write here "Ve'archu Eitzim al ha'Eish"?
Yoma, 26b: 'Im Eino Inyan' - If the Pasuk is not needed to teach us the Din by the Tamid shel Shachar, we will apply it to the Tamid shel bein ha'Arbayim ? to teach us that the Kohanim should bring two aditional logs of wood every afternoon for the Tamid shel bein ha'Arbayim.
What are the implications of "Ve'archu Eitzim al ha'Eish"?
Yerushalmi Yoma, 2:1: It implies that the fire must precede the logs of wood.
QUESTIONS ON RASHI
Rashi writes that that even though fire descends from Heaven, it is a Mitzvah for a Hedyot to bring fire. If so, Nadav and Avihu acted correctly properly. So why were they punished?
Refer to 10:1:1:1-5.
Moshav Zekenim: Because they were Kohanim Gedolim. 1
They were not full Kohanim Gedolim who must serve with eight garments (however, refer to 10:1:155:1-3 and the notes there). Rather, [after Aharon] they were the most esteemed; they should have let Elazar or Isamar, who were Hedyotim (less esteemed), bring it. (PF)
