Malbim: Had he not told Sar ha'Sarisim, perhaps Sar ha'Sarisim, who constantly oversees the food, would have found out [and punished him]. Only after he found grace in the eyes of Sar ha'Sarisim, he knew that he will overlook what the Meltzar does. Daniel did not tell the Meltzar why he wants only seeds.
