Radak #1: Perhaps he found him at Beis ha'Bamah.

Radak #2: Perhaps the verse omits that Sha'ul returned to his city, and his uncle found him there.

Why does the Navi record this question and answer? What do we learn from it?

Malbim: His uncle sensed that prophecy does not come without a reason. He saw Bnei ha'Nevi'im drawing Ru'ach ha'Kodesh from Sha'ul, and asked about this. Sha'ul answered that he went to Shmuel via the loss of the donkeys. This did not explain getting prophecy (so his uncle asked again).
