1)

We find only that people of Arei Yehudah made Rechav'am king (10:17). Why would Binyamin help Rechav'am?

1.

'Rashi': Yehudah and Binyamin were together on the border 1 , and Yerushalayim was of both of them, and the Beis ha'Mikdash and Mizbe'ach were built in both of their portions. They could not separate from each other!

2.

Radak (here and Melachim I, 12:20): They are considered like one Shevet, for both had parts of Yerushalayim. Whoever rules over Yerushalayim will surely rule over both of them.

1

Why is this a barrier to separating? Binyamin shared a border also with other tribes, e.g. Efrayim! We find that Binyamin fought against the rest of Yisrael in the episode of Pilegesh b'Giv'ah! (However, that was before they knew where the Beis ha'Mikdash will be. - (PF)

2)

Why did they expect to be able to defeat 10 Shevatim?

1.

Refer to Melachim I, 12:21:2:1.

3)

Why does it say here to return ha'Mamlachah to Rechav'am, and in Melachim I, 12:21 ha'Meluchah?

1.

Malbim (here and 7:17): Meluchah is ruling over part of Yisrael (not necessary permanently). He already had this; he did not need to return it. Mamlachah is ruling over [all of] Yisrael permanently 1 .

I do not understand why there (7:17) it says that he wanted to return the Meluchah. (PF)
