What is the significance of many who sleep in the earth wakening?
Rashi: The dead will live.
Ibn Ezra citing a Gaon: Those who waken will have eternal life. Those who do not waken will have eternal shame.
Ibn Ezra: Tzadikim who died in Galus will live when the redeemer comes. It says about them "ki'Ymei ha'Etz Yemei Ami." They will get pleasure from Livyasan, Ziz and Behemos 1 , and die a second time. They will live in Techiyas ha'Mesim in the world to come. There, they do not eat or drink; they only enjoy the radiance of the Shechinah. So this Sefer finishes, "v'Sanu'ach v'Sa'amod l'Goralcha l'Ketz ha'Yamin."
Ibn Ezra citing R. Yeshu'ah: This is a Mashal for Yisrael in Galus, like houses. The redeemer will come for good for Tzadikei Yisrael, and for evil for Resha'im. A wise person will understand which Perush is correct; Chazal's words support the Gaon (refer to 12:2:1:2).
Vayikra Rabah 22: Behemos b'Harerei Elef are giant animals that graze on 1000 mountains each day. Ziz Shadai is a giant bird – when it spreads its wings, it darkens the sun. It has all kinds of tastes.
What will happen to the dead when they waken?
Refer to 12:2:1:2-3.
Malbim: They will ride with the body and Nefesh, like they were when alive. Therefore they are called sleeping, like one who sleeps – his Nefesh returns to him, and he wakens.
Why does it say "Rabim"?
Ibn Ezra citing a Gaon: "Rabim" are the minority, like "v'Rabim Mevi'im Minchah", "v'Rabim me'Amei ha'Aretz Misyahadim."
Malbim: Some of the Tzadikim will rise, and some of the Resha'im.
Is Techiyas ha'Mesim connected to the Ge'ulah?
Malbim citing Mahari: Yes. Many who suffered in Galus and were Moser Nefesh for Kidush Hashem, they should not say that their hope is lost. Also the Resha'im who did evil to them will waken. The former waken to eternal life, just like they despised life of the body and gave it to be killed for Hashem's honor. The latter will receive their punishment, and see the success of the nation that they afflicted and stabbed. There is another benefit – people in every generation who were noted, they will tell the living who is important in that world 1 , and what is the true Emunah. All nations will learn the true Emunah; v'Hayah Hashem Echad u'Shmo Echad."
This implies that dead will rise in all generations to inform the living! This requires investigation. (PF)
