What does "ve'Chol asher Lahem" incorporate?

1.

Yerushalmi Sanhedrin, 10a #1 (citing R. B'rachyah in the name of R. Chelbo: It incorporates even their names, which disappeared from all their storehouses and documents and rolled down the hole.

2.

Yerushalmi Sanhedrin, 10a #2 (citing R. Eliezer: It incorporates even a needle that someone had borrowed from them rolled down the hole. 1

1

See Torah Temimah, note 28.

2)

?Vayerdu Heim ? Chayim She?olah?. What are the connotatons of ?She?olah??

1.

R. Bachye (citing Eruvin 19a): It means ?they descended alive to the seventh (and bottom) level of Gehinom? 1 (and this teaches us that one of the three entrances 2 to Gehinom is in the desert - Eruvin). 3

1

As the Pasuk writes in Tehilim 9:18: ?Yashuvu Resh?im li?She?ol?. See R. Bachye, who elaborates.

2

The other two entrances are in the sea and in Yerushalayim. See also Ba?al ha?Turim.

3

See Torah Temimah note 25.

3)

?Vayerdu Heim ? Chayim She?olah?. What is the significance of the vfact thsat they wwent down to Gehinom?

1.

R. Bachye (on Pasuk 35): Because it is the way of Hakadosh-Baruch-Hu to punish ?Midah ke?Neged Midah?. Consequently, since Korach ?the father of all egoists, in his attack against Hashem, sought to raise himself to a high position that was not his, Hashem sent him down - ?Midah k?Neged Midah?. 1

Refer also to 16:35:1:2.

4)

What are the implications of "Vat'chas aleihem ha'Aretz"?

1.

Ramban and Seforno: Refer to 16:30:1:5 .

2.

Sanhedrin 108a (according to R. Akiva): It means that they will not arise at Techi?as ha?Meisim. 1

1

See Torah Temimah citing R. Eliezer, who, citing Shmuel 1, 2:6 ?Hashem Meimis u?Mechayeh Morid She?ol Vaya?al, proves that Korach will arise at Techi'as ha'Meisim. See also note 29 - that this is the majority opinion. Refer also to 16:33:2:4.

5)

What does the Torah mean when it writes "va'Yovdu mi'Toch ha'Kahal"?

1.

Ramban #1: It means that they disappeared before the eyes of the congregation; one moment they were standing there, the next moment they were gone, leaving no sign of where they had just been standing.

2.

Ramban #2 (citing Ibn Ezra): It means that they perished together with their children, who should have replaced them.

3.

Sanhedrin, 108a: It means that they also lost their portion in the world to come. 1 2

4.

Yerushalmi Sanhedrin, 10:4: The Torah is comparing them via a Gezeirah Shavah "Vayovdu" "Hayisi ke'Seh Oveid, Bakeish Avdecha!" - in Tehilim, 119:176 - to a lost article that is sought, 3 so too, will the congregation of Korach be sought - and will merit a portion in the world to come. 4

1

R. Bachye: And the Torah writes ?mi?Toch ha?Kahal? - because of the peinciple ?All of Yisrael have a portion in Olam ha?Ba?. They will however arise at Techi?as ha?Meisim. See note 2. See also R. Chavel?s footnotes DH ?le?Asid Lavo Chozrim?.

2

And this teaches us that whoever attacks the Torah attempts to uproot its foundations loses his portion in the Olam ha?Ba. And the Torah writes ?mi?Toch ha?Kahal? - and not ?mi?Toch Yisrael - because of the Pasuk in 19:20 ?Venichresah ha? Nefesh ha?Hi mi?Toch ha?Kahal?.

3

See Torah Temimah, note 30.

4

This is difficult to understand seeing as they died without doing Teshuvah and that consequently, neither their death nor their burial atoned for them. Refer to 16:30:151:4.
