Rashi: It is iron [plates] covering [the holes in] his armor; they overlap each other, like Kaskasos (fish scales). Radak - the armor is made of rings; the 'scales' cover the holes, lest an arrow enter.

According to Rashi (refer to 17:7:2:1), this is about 2,000 kilos! If the Shekalim were Chulin Shekalim of the Torah (half of Kodesh Shekalim), it would be about 40 kilos. (PF)
