Malbim: Nebuchadnetzar decreed to kill them, because (a) they did not become wise enough to fulfill his request, or (b) their Chochmah is folly. Why should he finance them for no reason 1 ? Therefore, he said that the king's request is above the ability of humans who work via Shedim, stars or nature, which are lowly powers.
This is a reason to cease feeding them. Perhaps he commanded to kill them for being fed from the king until now, without benefit to the king. (PF)
