Is this punishment natural, or supernatural?
Malbim: Our verse discusses a natural punishment. You will not be able to have full love and a true covenant with them. Even at a tranquil time, they will gouge out your eyes through envy and hatred. The next verses foretell evil that will befall you via Hashgachah.
