Why does it say that they had no children?

'Rashi': This is why Elazar and Itamar were Kohanim in place of them. Had they had sons, their sons would have had precedence over Elazar and Itamar for Kehunah Gedolah. We find that Yehotzadak was Kohen Gadol rather than his younger brother Ezra, and also his son Yehoshua had precedence over Ezra 1 .

If the Kohen Gadol's son is proper to succeed him, he has precedence (Rashi Shemos 29:30, from Pesikta Zutresa Tzav p.21a). Why would sons of Elazar and Itamar have precedence over Elazar and Itamar? All of them served equally in the Milu'im! - PF}

Presumably, he expounds the Torah verse, but it is reasonable to explain our verse similarly. (PF)
