1)

Why does the Torah insert the (otherwise superfluous) words "Ki Yamuch Achicha"?

1.

Rashi: To teach us that one may not sell one's ancestral inheritance unless one is forced to do so due to poverty 1 (but not to place money in his purse or to purchase an animal, vessels or a house - Sifra).

2.

Da'as Zekenim: To enable Yirmiyah to tell Hashem 'You fulfilled "Ki Yamuch Achicha u'Machar" (Yisrael were exiled due to transgressing Sh'mitah); fulfill "ve'Ga'al es Mimkar Achiv"! 2

3.

Oznayim la'Torah: Torah inserts this phrase three times ? here, in Pasuk 35 and in Pasuk 39 ? to teach us a. that even when your fellow-Jew becomes poor, he is still your brother; b. that that is not only in order to redeem his fields, but also to assist him if he neeeds your support and c. that even if he has been purchase as an Eved Ivri, he is still your Brother and you should treat Him with compassion.

1

See Torah Temimah, note 118.

2

Bearing in mind that Hashem called Yisrael His brothers, as the Pasuk writes in Tehilim, 122:8 "le'Ma'an Achai ve'Re'ai"!'

2)

Why does the Torah describe a sale from the point of view of the seller "u'Machar me'Achuzaso" and not of the purchaser 've'Kanah ,,, '?

1.

Kidushin, 9a: To teach us that, when writing a Sh'tar Mechirah, the seller writes 'Sadi Mechurah lach' - and not the purchaser, 'Sadcha Kenuyah li'. 1

2.

Refer to 25:25:2:1.

1

See Torah Temimah, note 119.

3)

What is the significance of the 'Mem' in the word "u'Machar me'Achuzaso"?

1.

Rashi: To teach us that, even when one is forced to sell one's ancestral inheritance, one should sell only some of it, but not all of it.

4)

What is the definition of "Go'alo"?

1.

Rashi (in Rus, 3:9): It refers to a blood relative. 1

1

As in Rus (Ibid).

5)

Seeing as "Go'alo" by definition means a blood relative, why does the Torah add "ha'Karov Eilav"?

1.

Sifra: To teach us that a closer relative takes precedence over one who is further removed.

6)

What are the connotations of "ve'Ga'al eis Mimkar Achiv"?

1.

Rashi: It means that if his relarive comes to redeem it, the purchaser may not prevent him from doing so. 1

1

Kidushin, 21a: There is no obligation on his relatives however, to redeem the field ? as the following Pasuk implies.

7)

Why does the Torah write "Mimkar" Achiv" and not 'Mecher Achiv'?

1.

Sifra: To incorporate a gift in the Din of Pidyon. 1
