Why does it say "Lachen"?

1.

Rashi: Also now, the sin of Yakov will be atoned for, to merit to be redeemed like then.

2.

Radak: Even though they had also other sins, the primary sin was idolatry.

3.

Malbim: The great storm and anger that He showed was not to destroy, rather, to atone for their sins via Teshuvah. It is as if His Ru'ach was harsh on a stormy day.

2)

Why does it say "v'Zeh Kol Pri Hasir Chataso"?

1.

Rashi: This is good for him, in order to remove his sin.

2.

Radak: If he will remove [the idolatry], what will be the fruits of this? Removing all his sin. Since they uproot idolatry, all the more so they will repent from other Aveiros. When idolatry is obliterated from deed and thought, they will repent fully to Hashem and do His Mitzvos, for idolatry is the primary sin.

3.

Malbim: It will remove "Avon" (Mezid sin), and also "Chataso" (Shogeg).

Which Mizbechos are discussed?

Rashi: They are Bamos [Malbim - for idolatry].

4)

What is "Gir"?

1.

Rashi: It is a kind of dye.

2.

Radak: It is plaster. In Arame'ic, we find "Al Gira Di Kesal Heichala" (Daniel 5:5).

5)

What are "Menufatzos"?

1.

Rashi: They are pierced. This is like "v'Nipetz Es Olalayich" (Tehilim 137:9).

6)

Why does it say "Lo Yakumu Asherim v'Chamanim"?

1.

Rashi: It is in order that they not keep idolatry.

2.

Radak: They must destroy the altars, Asherim and Chamanim well, on condition that they not establish others afterwards, for then their Teshuvah is not complete. Rather, they must uproot belief in them from their hearts. Then, permanent destruction of them will atone for their sin.
