What did he fear?
Rashi: I always feared lest [such afflictions] come. Malbim - do not say that it came to me because I did not prepare means to avoid evil. I always feared it, and did everything proper to guard from mishaps. Even so, it came to me! My efforts did not help 1 .
Malbim: Those who believe in the rule of the Ma'arachah say that a decree on man due to the Ma'arachah affects his heart. He always fears the evil decreed on him. They always feared from any fear they sensed. Iyov's fear came about; his efforts to avoid it were futile!
Why did he say "Pachad Pachadti"?
Devar Eliyahu #1: Pachad Pachadti refers to two fears about his children - perhaps they sinned, and perhaps they cursed Hashem in their hearts (1:5).
Devar Eliyahu #2: There are two fears. (a) Fear of punishment, lest evil befall him - "Choneh Mal'ach Hashem Saviv li'Yre'av va'Ychaltzem." (b) Fear amidst love [of Hashem, awe of His grandeur] - "Yir'u Es Hashem Kedoshav." I had both of them, and even so great afflictions befell me!
Why does it say "va'Ye'esayeni" and "[va'Asher Yagorti] Yavo Li"?
Devar Eliyahu #1: The former refers to what comes to a person via something else; the latter is what comes upon him himself.
Devar Eliyahu #2: The latter contrasts to "umi'Kol Megurosai Hitzilani."
