"Ki Anan Hashem al h'Mishkan Yomam". Why does the Torah not write simply "Anan ba'Yom ve'Eish Tih'yeh ba'Laylah"?

1.

R. Bachye: In order to hint at the Midah of Yom ? 'Rachamim', 1 and the Midash of Laylah ? 'Din'. 2 3

1

R. Bachye: That is why, like the word 'Rachamim', 'Yomam' is written double. See R. Chavel's footnotes.

2

Since the actual word is 'Layil', and the 'Hey' hints at Midas ha'Din.

3

See R. Bachye who elaborates.

2)

Why does the Torah write "Tih'yeh Laylah bo" - in the future?

1.

Oznayim la'Torah #1: Hashem was speaking to Yisrael in the daytime, so he added that, when night arrived, a pillar of fire would cover the camp.

2.

Oznayim la'Torah: It is a hint that even in the night of Galus there will be a pillar of fire - in the form of the Beis-Hamikdash that will descend from Heaven - as Rashi and Tosfos write in Sukah, 41a. 1

1

Oznayim la'Torah: And as is hinted in Zecharyah 2:9.

3)

Why, in Pasuk 36, did the Torah write "Yis'u B'nei Yisrael", and here "le'Einei Kol Beis Yisrael" (incorporating the women)?

1.

R. Bachye: Because, wheress in Pasuk 36, it only mentions the Cloud, here, it mentions also the Eish (the Kavod), and it wants to highlight the greatness of Machaneh Yisrael, that men and women alike, saw the Kavod covered by the Cloud. 1

1

See R. Bachye who, citing the Tanchuma, discusses the difference between this world, where our sins cused the Shechinah to depart, and the time of Mashi'ach, where it will remain forever.

4)

Since the Cloud and the Fire covered the Mishkan when they encamped, why does the Torah write "be'Chol Mas'eihem"?

1.

Rashi: Because the location where they encamped was also called 'Masa'. 1

1

As we find in Lech L'cha Bereishis, 13:3, and in Mas'ei Bamidbar, 33:1 (Rashi).
