What is the significance of hunger and war?

1.

Devar Eliyahu: Hunger is bi'Ydei Shamayim; war is bi'Ydei Adam. It is harsher, for one must be saved from someone with choice.

2.

Malbim: Hunger can save from death! If your country will be overturned by earthquakes, and Hashem sent hunger that forced you to go to another land to seek bread, this saved you from death! Also war can save! If Ploni plotted to kill you with a sword, and due to war you carried a sword with you, when Ploni confronts you, you will be able to save yourself!
