Malbim: Nebuchadnetzar called him Belteshatzar, like his idolatry. Also the king is called by this name of honor 1 . From when Belshatzar became king, no one else may be called via this name. Therefore, he is called Daniel. This does not blemish his Chochmah; he will interpret the matter.
Just there is no Tes in Belshatzar's name. Rav Sadya Gaon (5:1) says that it has no Tes because he stretched his hand against Klei Hashem; his name is like Balash Otzar (he searches for treasure]. (PF)
