From where did the fingers come?
Rashi: From Shamayim.
What is "la'Kavel Nevrashta"?
Rashi: It is opposite the candelabra in front of the table. This is like 'she made a gold Nivreshes' (Yuma 37a).
What is "Gira"?
Rashi: It is plaster on the wall of the house, like "v'Avnei Gir Menupatzos."
What is "Pas Yeda"?
Ibn Ezra: It is a cut off hand. This is like "Yehi Pisas Bar", "Kesones Pasim." They saw hands without a body.
First it says that they saw [only] fingers, and afterwards, "Pas Yeda" (the entire palm)!
Malbim: The Sarim saw only fingers; the king saw the entire palm. This proved that it was a miracle 1 , and not imagination, error of senses, nor writing of an enemy of the king to scare him. There were three other proofs. (a) All the officers saw - many would not imagine or err. (b) It was opposite the candelabra - it is light without shadows, so people do not err. (c) It was on plaster on the wall of the house, which is higher than man's hand reaches (an enemy could not write there).
I.e. he asked them what they saw, even though the verses do not mention this. (PF)
