Who tells you what is good?
Rashi: Hashem. Malbim ? this explains what Hashem told you "Min ha'Shitim Ad ha'Gilgal" (5).
What do we learn from "Adam"?
Malbim: What is good for you because you are a person - Mitzvos Bein Adam l'Chavero.
What is the meaning of "Mah Tov"?
Rashi: What is good for you to do.
Radak: This answers the question ? I do not desire Olos, rather, doing good, like Shmuel said "Hinei Shome'a mi'Zevach Tov" (Shmuel I, 15:22).
Malbim: What is good for man in civil life.
What do we learn from "u'Mah Hashem Doresh Mimecha"?
Malbim: This refers to Mitzvos Bein Adam la'Makom.
What is included in "Asos Mishpat"?
Radak: It is all Mitzvos Bein Adam l'Chavero, like monetary damages and other matters. Also Arayos are included. It says "Es Mishpatai Ta'asu?; Ervas Avicha v'Ervas Imecha?" (Vayikra 18:4, 7).
Radak citing Makos 24a: They are monetary laws. Malbim ? they guard civil life from theft and oppression.
What is "Ahavas Chesed"?
Makos 24a: This is Gemilus Chasadim. Radak - he should do more than is proper for him.
What is "v'Hatzne'a Leches Im Elokecha"?
Rashi citing Targum Yonasan: Be modest, to be in fear of your G-d.
Rashi: Hashem ways are unlike people's ways. If a person shamed his friend, and later comes to appease him, he is not appeased until this is done in front of those who saw him shamed. Hashem desires only that the person repent between him and Hashem 1 .
Radak: It is unity of His name, loving Him with all the heart and Nefesh. It says "v'Hatzne'a" because it depends on the heart ? it is a matter of Tzeni'us (hidden).
Radak citing Makos 24a: It is escorting the dead and bringing a Kalah to Chupah. Even though these are normally done in public, they should be done modestly. All the more so, things that are normally done covertly should be done modestly!
Orchos Tzadikim (Sha'ar ha'Anavah DH Harbeh): One should flee grandeur and honor. Tzeni'us depends on this.
Mesilas Yesharim (Perek 20): An additional Chasidus is not to do matters of Chasidus in front of commoners who will laugh and mock him. They will be punished via him! A Chasid should refrain in such a case. Many great Chasidim abandoned their customs of Chasidus when among commoners, for it is like haughtiness.
Malbim: You must go with your G-d, like "Es ha'Elokim His'halech Noach" (Bereishis 6:9). This is the root of Mitzvos Bein Adam la'Makom ? to go with Elokim, go in His ways and become Kadosh with His Kedushah ? "vi'Hyisem Kedoshim Ki Kadosh Ani" (Vayikra 11:44). This should be modest and hidden, for they are matters between you and your Maker. Here Tzeni'us is good, lest one be haughty in investigation of Elokus, or become wise about His Mitzvos 2 .
If he sinned in front of others, this is Chilul Hashem, for which Kaparah is finished only after death (Yuma 86a), unless he is able to do Kidush Hashem (Kad ha'Kemach Lulav, Alshich Shemos 35 DH va'Yakhel). Perhaps Rashi discusses one who disgraced Hashem without Chilul Hashem, i.e. those who saw will not be influenced by it. (PF)
I.e. like Shlomo reasoned, the Torah forbids a king to marry too many women, lest they veer his heart ? I will marry, and my heart will not veer (Shemos Rabah 6:1)! (PF)
