What are the connotations of "ha'Yashar ve'ha'Tov"?
Rashi #1 (citing Raboseinu) 1 and Ramban #1: It refers to compromise - going Lif'nim mi'Shuras ha'Din 2 (beyond the letter of the law).
Rashi #2 (in Re'ei, 12:28): It means what is right in the eyes of man and what is good in the Eyes of Hashem. 3
Ramban #2: It means to figure out what is right and good in the Eyes of Hashem 4 and to do it.
Bava Metzi'a, 16 b: It means for example, a creditor allowing the debtor to redeem his field if he subsequently finds money to pay his debt - and forcing someone who owns a field among fields belonging to brothers or partners to sell it to them Bava Metzi'a, 108a. 5

Ramban: The Torah inserts this after the command to observe the Mitzvos that are obligatory, to teach us to do what is right and good even regarding matters that the Torah did not issue a command. See Ramban, DH 've'Zeh Inyan Gadol', who elaborates. Refer also to 12:28:2:1.
