What is "Yonah Posah"?

1.

Radak: It is trapped in a net due to its folly. The same applies to other birds; it mentions a dove, for it has no sadness. It is as if it goes simply, and does not sense the evil that it will find.

2.

Radak citing Targum Yonasan: Beis Yisrael are like a dove Serichasa. Aruch ? it weeps and scratches its face. This is like Arabic, in which a woman who weeps and scratches her face is called Sarichah.

2)

Do they lack a heart?

1.

Rashi: They do not distinguish between what is good for them and bad for them.

2.

Radak: The bird does not understand that when it comes to gather the seeds, a net is spread there to catch it. So Efrayim, when they went and asked for help from Ashur or Egypt, this will harm them, to request help from Nochrim, and not from Hashem, that everything is in His hands. When they think to get help from them, they will fall into Hashem's net ? "Ka'asher Yelechu Efros Aleihem Rishti" (12).

3.

Malbim: It does everything without a heart and Sechel.

3)

What is the significance of calling to Egypt?

1.

Rashi: Egypt always harmed them, and now they call to them for help.

2.

Malbim: Since they were under the authority of Ashur, they should not have called to Egypt for help. This was the reason for their exile ? Melech Ashur found a conspiracy in Hoshe'a, who sent to Soa Melech Mitzrayim. Therefore, he incarcerated Hoshe'a, besieged Shomron and exiled Yisrael to Ashur.

4)

Why does it say "Ashur Halachu"?

1.

Rashi: They went to Melech Ashur, that he should help them.

2.

Malbim: This was another folly. "He incarcerated Hoshe'a, besieged Shomron and exiled Yisrael" (Melachim II, 17:4) implies that Hoshe'a went to greet Melech Ashur like a submissive slave; he incarcerated him and did not let him return to Shomron, and then he besieged Shomron. Had Hoshe'a stayed in Shomron, Melech Ashur could not have incarcerated him. He needed to besiege Shomron for three years! It was folly to go to Melech Ashur, for he was Chayav Misah for rebelling and sending to Egypt 1 .

Surely he did not expect that Yisraelim will tell Melech Ashur that he sent to Soa. Surely he realized that many opposed him for nullifying Avodah of the calves ? perhaps he thought that even so, they would not slander him to Melech Ashur, lest this endanger Yisrael. (PF)
