Why did he say "Al Ya'azvenu v'Al Yitshenu"?
Malbim: He has two ways to cause Yisrael to fulfill Torah and fear Him. (a) Via punishments and Hester Panim; evils and afflictions come upon them, until they realize that this was due to their sins. (b) He conducts with them with constant Hashgachah and shows to them His signs and wonders, so they will recognize that He is their G-d, and all their good comes from Him. So He conducted with them when He took them out of Egypt. There were constant miracles, and Hashgachah always clung to them. Shlomo wanted Hashem to do so with Yisrael, like He did with their fathers. "Al Ya'azvenu" - do not keep us from straying in the latter 1 way, via punishments, rather, in the former way, like You did with our fathers.
This is the first way Malbim discussed! Perhaps 'latter' means the latter method He used; the first method was constant miracles and Hashgachah with those who left Egypt. (PF)
