Why does it say "va'Yomer Elai"?
Malbim: One angel asked another angel, but he replied to me (Daniel), for the answer was in order that I will know.
How much is "Ad Erev Boker Alpayim u'Shelosh Me'os"?
Rashi citing Rav Sadya Gaon: Until the Erev about which it says "v'Hayah l'Es Erev Yihyeh Ohr." We trust that Hashem's word will stand forever, and not be annulled.
Rashi: Erev Boker is Gematriya. One support is that it equals another calculation at the end of this Sefer (refer to 12:11:1:1). Another is that below (26), Gavriel told Daniel "u'Mar'eh ha'Erev veha'Boker? Emes Hu." If Erev Boker does not hint to a calculation, why did he repeat it to say "Emes Hu"? He was commanded to conceal the matter. We wait for the promise of our King. If one expounded the Ketz, and it passed [and Ge'ulah did not come], we know that he erred. The Gematriya of Erev Boker is 574. Together with 2300, this is 2874.
Ibn Ezra (25, citing Rav Sadya Gaon): We count 2300 years from Yetzi'as Mitzrayim 1 .
Ibn Ezra (25): For six years and months in the days of Antiyochus, Yisrael were in great affliction. So it says in Sefer Yavan; 2300 days are six solar years, three months and days (a partial month), or almost six and a half lunar years. One knows this only after that affliction came; this is why Daniel did not understand it. The Ketz of Ge'ulah is hidden. Daniel did not know it ? he said "va'Eshtomem Al ha'Mar'eh v'Ein Mevin" (27). At the end of the Sefer, he said "Shamati v'Lo Avin." When the Ketz comes, the wise will understand from the angel's words.
Malbim: This is the time until Erev (Romi's Churban) and until it will be morning again ? the future redemption.
Ibn Ezra: Why should we count from then? And how do Erev and Boker apply to years? Also, his Ketz passed many years ago!
What is the meaning of "v'Nitzdak Kodesh"?
Rashi: The sin of Yisrael will be atoned, to nullify decrees of being trampled, from the first Galus to Egypt until the eternal redemption with Melech ha'Mashi'ach. This will be 1290 years from when the Tamid ceased, like it says below (12:11). Then, Mashi'ach will remove the idolatry. The Tamid ceased six years before Churban Sheni 1 . Yisrael were in Egypt 210 years. Bayis Rishon was built 480 years from Yetzi'as Mitzrayim, and stood 410 years. Galus Bavel was 70 years, and Bayis Sheni stood 420 years. If we add 1290 years, this is 2880 years. We must deduct six, for the 1290 were counted from Bitul ha'Tamid, six years before the Churban. Refer to 12:12:1:1.
Ibn Ezra: Kodesh will return to Tzedek. Also refer to 8:19:1:1.
Malbim #1: Kodesh will return to its Tzedek like before, i.e. Beis ha'Mikdash and Kedushas Yisrael.
Malbim #2: Then, the sin of Yisrael will be atoned, and Kedushas Yisrael will be justified. Then, all nations will recognize that Yisrael's Torah and Emunah are true. Many Goyim will be drawn after Hashem then. If we count 2300 years from Churban Rishon, which was in the year 3338, this comes to 5638. However, it did not say that the count is from the Churban. Rather, it is from when the angel spoke to Daniel in Belshatzar's third year (50 years later), so it will be no later than year 5688. I explained that the calculation of "Idan v'Idanin u'Flag Idan" comes to 5673 (refer to 7:25:4:2) ? 15 years earlier! This is because from the end of the rule of the small horn discussed above, until Binyan Beis ha'Mikdash and Hakravas ha'Tamid mentioned here, will be 15 years. Chazal said that the coming of [Mashi'ach] ben David will extend one Shevu'ah, as will the days of Gog and Magog (Yerushalmi Shevi'is). This is 14 years until Binyan Beis ha'Mikdash.
Rashi: On the 17th of Tamuz, and Apostamus burned the Torah, erected an idol in the Heichal and ceased the Tamid (Ta'anis 26a). I cannot prove that this was six years before the Churban. I can prove that it was less than seven years, for Daniel prophesized about Titus "va'Chatzi ha'Shavu'a Yashbis Zevach u'Minchah", i.e. part of the Shavu'a (seven years) before the Churban, Korbanos will cease.
