What does the fig tree represent?

1.

Rashi: It refers to Devorah. 1 Bereishis Rabsi (20:15) - she was sweet to Yisrael like honey, and veered from all her engagements to judge Yisrael.

2.

Malbim: The Chachamim did not find a proper king, so they ceased to seek. The rich people then sought what is pleasant for the body; figs are sweet and taste good. 2

1

Why did Yosam not say a date tree? She sat under Tomer Devorah (4:5)! (PF)

2

Malbim: They said Lechi (go to be king) - they recognized that a king should be a spiritual man. In any case, they sought a powerful man who can provide them with comforts and pleasant life.
